Collagen Peptides: The 2024 Study on Sports Recovery

A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2024 (Bischof et al.) provides new data on the value of collagen peptides in sports recovery.
STUDY PROTOCOL
Researchers followed athletes for 12 weeks:
- Supplemented group: 15g of collagen peptides/day
- Placebo group: inactive substance
- Measurement of muscle stress markers after intense exercise
MAIN RESULTS
The supplemented group had lower levels of systemic stress markers after exercise-induced muscle damage.
A previous study on whey hydrolysate had shown:
- Lower creatine kinase (CK) levels at 48h
- Better reactive strength index
- Increased flexibility
MOLECULAR WEIGHT: A KEY FACTOR
Low molecular weight collagen peptides have better pharmacokinetic properties. Smaller peptides are absorbed more efficiently, reinforcing the importance of molecular weight in bioavailability.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
These results suggest potential value for:
- Athletes in intensive recovery phases
- Rehabilitation protocols
- Prevention of recurring injuries
Research continues to determine optimal dosages and populations that would benefit most from this supplementation.
